Empower Your Voice: The Importance of Voting

At Cascade AIDS Project (CAP), we believe in the power of community and the impact each of us can have on shaping our future. One of the most vital ways we can make our voices heard is through voting. Whether it's for local or national elections, every vote matters, and every vote contributes to the direction of our community and our nation.

Why Your Vote Matters

Voting is more than just a civic duty; it's an opportunity to influence the decisions that affect your life and the lives of those around you. From healthcare and housing to education and public safety, the leaders we elect make critical decisions on these issues and more. By voting, you have the power to choose representatives who align with your values and who will advocate for the issues that matter most to you.

What's New: Ranked-Choice Voting in Portland

This November, Portland will be using ranked-choice voting for the first time, a significant change that gives us even more power as voters. Instead of choosing just one candidate, you can now rank up to six candidates in order of preference. This means you can vote for your true favorite without fear of "wasting" your vote if they don't win. Your backup choices still count and can influence the outcome of the election.

Ranked-choice voting encourages candidates to reach out to a broader base of voters, ensuring that they must appeal to more than just their core supporters. This change not only makes the election process more inclusive but also ensures that the elected leaders represent the majority's choice.

How to Get Ready

It's essential to understand how ranked-choice voting works before you cast your ballot. The City of Portland has created a helpful voter education resource where you can learn more and even try a practice ballot. Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the process so you can confidently make your voice heard this November.

Make Your Plan to Vote

Voting is easy and accessible. You will receive your ballot by mail and can return it by mail or drop it off at a designated location. It's important to make a plan for when and how you'll vote to ensure your ballot is submitted on time.
